Although male sexuality can be discussed comfortably, female sexuality is rarely expressed and is described as “shameful.” In this case, women try to find solutions to their own problems through “secretly” or “indirectly” heard information from their surroundings. However, serious problems in women that require treatment can also be identified by physicians, and their problems can be solved with rational treatment options. It should not be forgotten that every woman’s problem must be handled on an individual basis; one person’s sexual problem and treatment differ from others because of the underlying causes, anatomical differences, and partner differences. In this article series, sexual reluctance (decreased libido), which is one of the sexual desire disorders among female sexual problems, will be discussed. In our next article series, orgasm disorders will be the subject. It should also not be forgotten that female sexuality is complex and therefore such problems can only be overcome not only by one group of physicians but by physicians from different branches working together.

What is sexual desire and decreased sexual desire in women?

It is the condition of having little desire and few fantasies regarding sexual intercourse. In this case, the question of how often comes to mind. However, a standard value cannot be stated for this. Especially in a complex subject such as female sexuality, it would not be correct to give a normal number. However, if the lack of sexual desire and fantasies bothers the person and negatively affects life by influencing partner relationships, then it is necessary to consult a physician.

Am I the only one with this complaint?

When sexuality is seen almost as a taboo, a woman who thinks she has low sexual desire asks herself questions such as “why me, am I the only one with this problem?” However, studies conducted in sexually active women indicate an average frequency of around 20–30%, depending on the definitions used. Therefore, if you have this complaint, you are not “alone.”

What can be the causes of low libido in women?

In the complex nature of female sexuality, there may also be important medical reasons that should be investigated for low desire.

  • Some periods in a woman’s life

Menopause. A decrease in hormones in women, especially vaginal dryness and pain during sexual intercourse, may cause a decrease in sexual desire.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding. The effects of hormones, prioritizing baby care, and changes in body image may cause a decrease in sexual desire.

  • Diseases (diabetes, cancer, nervous system diseases, etc.)
  • High or abnormal levels of some hormones (such as high prolactin levels)
  • Medications (especially epilepsy medications, some antidepressants, etc.)
  • Some surgeries (especially some surgeries related to the breast and genital system in women)
  • Alcohol (it has been shown that excessive alcohol, contrary to popular belief, causes a decrease in sexual desire)

Apart from these, factors such as the partner’s attitude and the person’s psychological problems also significantly affect sexual desire in women.

Are examination and tests necessary in cases of low sexual desire?

Yes. During the examination, a condition that causes avoidance of sexual desire (for example, painful sexual intercourse, vaginal dryness and thinning, etc.) is investigated. It is recommended to perform tests such as blood count, thyroid tests, and blood sugar tests.

What SHOULD be done in case of low sexual desire?

A physician should be consulted. In treatment, couples are included in consultations together, their education is provided, and some medications may be used. However, it should not be forgotten that in order to solve this complex problem, physicians from different specialties need to evaluate the individuals together and determine the most appropriate treatment for that person.
